The purpose of this project was primarily to make a list of all musicians in the traditional jazz genre in Gothenburg, but the work grew to a monograph of not only the musicians, bands and venues, but also the entire jazz movement with a special focus on Dixieland, New Orleans Jazz and Swing. I have tried to explain the meaning of Traditional or Classic Jazz and other jazz styles. I have also described the “fight” between traditional and modern jazz.
In the early fifties, the traditional jazz movement developed, especially at the secondary schools. At the end of the decade, there was a huge interest among the students, but soon the rock’n’roll and pop bands outrivaled many of the school bands. However, many of the musicians from the fifties and sixties continued playing, and now (2010) there are more than forty bands playing traditional jazz and swing in this region. I have listed most of the jazz clubs and other venues, the bands and the players. There are lots of them!
This is the first attempt to describe a very important epoch in the jazz (and youth) history in Gothenburg.
